Would-be parents who want to work with an egg donor, but who don’t have the $30,000 or so in-vitro fertilization costs, have some hope. Many fertility centers give their recipient patients the option of splitting the cost of receiving an egg donation with another couple.

“It’s really great for the younger patients who haven’t had a chance to really acquire any finances,” says Dr. Bruce Rose of Infertility Solutions, P.C., a clinic in Allentown, Pa.”It gives them the chance to have a child not otherwise possible.”

Sharing Means Saving
This process can save patients up to 50% of the costs in this step in the in-vitro fertilization (IVF) process. In some cases what could typically cost $30,000 to $40,000 can come down in price to $15,000.

Other fertility treatment discounts are available, too. Dr. Carlos E. Soto-Albors, senior partner at the Northern California Fertility Medical Center in Roseville, Calif., is making IVF more affordable for patients by decreasing the cost each time they have the procedure, whether it is because they did not conceive the first time or because they want a second child.

“If they wait a year or two [to save additional monies for a second child] it will hurt their chance of getting pregnant,” he say.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS, is a condition in women that can cause infertility and unusual hair growth, and there are ways to recognize it and get help.

PCOS is noticeable when a sonogram of an ovary shows up with little dark circles around the edge that are tiny cysts.

Mercy Medical Center gynecologist Dr. Christine O’Connor said other symptoms are more obvious, such as the presence of male hormones or androgens.

“They cause hair growth in male patterns, on the face or the body, and irregular periods,” she said.Women who are obese are more at risk for PCOS, as well as those who have diabetes or a family history of infertility, O’Connor said.

Treatment can include oral contraceptives to make periods more regular; progestin, which is a female hormone; treatment of the excessive hair and diabetes medications.

“If they eat and exercise and lose just 10 percent of their body weight, they can often completely get rid of their symptoms,” O’Connor said.

Twelve thousand women participated in an online study on fertility facts, and only one woman answered all 15 questions correctly. Now one woman has launched a campaign using “martinis” and manicures to change that statistic.

“It’s a mind blow to me that women don’t understand and have not been given that good of information about the biological clock,” said Corey Whelan, the program director for the New York City-based American Fertility Association. “Most infertility can be avoided if women simply know the truth about when their body is no longer willing to cooperate.”

That’s why Whelan, 53, created the Manicures and Martinis Infertility Prevention Program—a national series of events where women can gather to sip non-alcoholic “fertiltinis,” get their nails done and ask fertility experts about how to prevent infertility. Fifty women attended the Chicago event Tuesday night at River North’s Allyu salon.

One of those women was 28-year-old physical therapist Janna Miller, who attended the event after hearing that her friend was using holistic methods to boost her fertility.

“I learned that my husband’s supplements that he’s taking could affect his fertility in the future,” she said.

Too-tight jeans are linked to low fertility in men, but it turns out that young women don’t get off scot-free. Extremely tight denims bring the knees closer together, causing an abnormal stride, says Janice Novak, author of “Posture: Get It Straight” (Expert Publishing, $16.95).

“When your hips don’t have normal range of motion, you get back pain,” Novak says. “Some muscles become excessively weak because they’re not working like they should, while others overwork.”

The solution will seem obvious to parents, if not to teens and tweens. Ditch the skinny jeans, or at the very least wear ones with a little stretch or spandex.

How can you tell if her jeans are too tight? If she can lift her knee to her chest without any trouble, the jeans are probably OK.
